Despite overcast conditions, the St. Edmond girls tennis team shined bright here Saturday in Class 1A team regional action at Dodger Courts.
The Gaels swept through first singles matches to advance, taking care of Aplington-Parkersburg in a Region 7 quarterfinal, 5-0. Next up for St. Edmond (7-0 overall) will be Carroll Kuemper (4-3) back here on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Ava Andrew started things off with a win at the No. 1 singles position, as the senior picked up a super-tiebreaker victory after splitting the first two sets, 10-6. Chloe Palmer, Abby Huss, Olivia Andrew and Sophia Schlienz all won in straight sets, as Ava Underberg was leading her match when it was called due to the dual being over.
"The girls played very well," SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. "I am extremely proud of Ava (Andrew) for battling back after a tough second set to get the win in her tiebreaker.
"The girls all came out really focused and ready to go, knowing that they would get another home match with a win. I'm excited to see them compete again on Wednesday."
The Knights advanced with a 5-2 win over Iowa Falls-Alden. The top half of the bracket will see Dike-New Hartford (13-1) take on Independence (4-4), with the winners meeting in Waterloo on Saturday from Byrnes Park Tennis Center.
St. Edmond has won each of the last two meetings with Carroll Kuemper, including a 7-2 victory earlier this year.
