Gael girls stay unbeaten

STORM LAKE — The St. Edmond girls tennis team remained unbeaten on the year, topping Storm Lake here Friday morning, 7-0.

Incoming rain led to two doubles matches that were in progress being suspended, as the Gaels were leading both.

Ava Andrew, Ava Underberg, Abby Huss, Chloe Palmer, Olivia Andrew and Sophia Schlienz were all winners in singles for St. Edmond. Olivia Andrew and Schlienz also picked up a doubles victory.

Palmer, Olivia Andrew and Schlienz all 8-0, as Underberg and Huss won by a score of 8-1.

“Ava was pushed at the No. 1 spot but dug in deep and held on for a nice win,” SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. “It’s been a big week and I was proud of the girls for coming out and finishing it off strong.”

Schlienz, in her first season on the tennis team, allowed just one point scored against her in her singles match.

“With a new lineup, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Neverman said. “But we couldn’t have had a better first week of matches.

“The girls worked hard in the short offseason and the results are showing on the courts.”

Earning junior varsity wins were Nina Smith, Lucy Midtling and Maggie Flaherty, as Smith and Flaherty, Midtling and Lizzy Tiernan, and Avenlee Hayek and Betsy Gruver scored doubles triumphs.

St. Edmond (3-0 overall) has won all but two matches in its first three duals, as they return to action on Tuesday when they host Nevada.

Starting at $4.94/week.
