Newell-Fonda punches another state ticket
FONDA — The sixth-ranked (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda softball team scored a spot in the state tournament with a 4-1 triumph vs. No. 12 Woodbine here Monday night.
The Mustangs will take on No. 5 Riverside, who advanced with an 11-1 victory over Stanton, next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Fort Dodge from Rogers Park.
Newell-Fonda (24-11 overall) got on the board with a run in the first before adding three in the fourth. The lone run for the Tigers came in the sixth.
Anna Mercer, Camryn Puhrmann and McKayla Hanson all had an RBI, as Puhrmann and Ellie Sievers recorded doubles. Inside the circle, Mercer struck out seven and allowed just four hits.
The Mustangs are coached by Fort Dodge Senior High and Iowa Central graduate Courtney (Vaughn) Darrow.
Other quarterfinal round matches at state include Wayne vs. Highland, Clarksville vs. Mason City Newman and Wapsie Valley vs. St. Edmond.
