No. 7 Gaels take down Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — The seventh-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team pulled away late here on Wednesday for an 8-2 victory over Humboldt.

Lauren Gibb finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored, while Gael twin sisters Ansley and Hadley Oswald recorded a combined four hits with a run scored and an RBI.

Mariah Myers was walked five times. Sophia Schlienz and Jade Rock each added an RBI.

Inside the circle for the Gaels (13-6 overall, 5-1 in North Central Conference), Toryn Helle allowed just four hits with three strikeouts and only one walk to secure the victory.

St. Edmond scored two in the first inning, only to be answered by a two-RBI single from Abby Armitage in the bottom of the inning. The Gaels plated a pair of runs in the second before scoring four in the seventh.

“I thought it was important that we had a big inning to end it going into this coming weekend,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “These girls have been tested (with games vs. North Polk, Van Meter and Treynor recently), and it will be an even bigger test in Waukee.”

Armitage finished 2-for-3 to lead the Wildcats (6-5, 4-4). Gracie Lyon and Claire Dieleman each scored a run.

This was the eighth consecutive victory in the series for St. Edmond, as they have won nine of 10 overall since Humboldt claimed eight in a row between 2017-20.

Next action for the Gaels will be Friday when they compete in the Jack North Tournament against No. 9 (5A) Muscatine and 11th-ranked (5A) Southeast Polk. On Saturday, they take on host and No. 1 (5A) Waukee Northwest and finish with Bettendorf.

The Wildcats head to Forest City Thursday before playing in the Roland-Story Kiwanis Tournament Friday and Saturday in Roland vs. Solon, Gilbert, No. 8 (3A) Estherville-LC and Benton.

Starting at $2.99/week.
