Iowa Central rugby star Takudzwa Musingwini was recently named the 2024-25 Algoe Award winner, an honor given annually to the top male athlete at the school.

Musingwini is a first team All-American and an academic all-region selection, as well as being recognized as the all-tournament captain at the Collegiate Rugby Championships.

“The essence of this award is about how an athlete represented Iowa Central athletics with their abilities and character. One of his most endearing qualities is how dedicated he is to his teammates and coaches,” said Brent Nelson, the Tritons’ head coach. “As far as rugby goes, he is a cheat code. It’s just fun to watch him play.

“Taku is not only one of the top players in the country in D1 rugby…he’s one of the best humans I have ever met.”

Musingwini helped lead the Iowa Central to the semifinal round of the Big Rivers conference tournament for the first time, as well as a No. 1 national ranking in 7s and a sixth-place overall finish at the CRC in the Premiere Division.

Musingwini recorded six tries at the CRCs in April. With the addition of his conversion kicks, he was one of the top scorers in the country.

Iowa Central defeated a number of Div. I opponents, and again became the only junior college program to qualify for the Premier Division.

A native of Zimbabwe, Musingwini was voted unanimously as the most valuable player of the program at their year-end banquet — the first time that has happened at Iowa Central. He is currently playing for his home Zimbabwe National squad.

“Taku is humble and respectful and carries himself with dignity and class,” Nelson said. “He volunteered for every single community service project we (the rugby team) were involved in.

“I think it’s very fitting he is the first player in the history of the rugby program to receive (the Algoe Award). He inspires people to be better versions of themselves.”
