Gaels pull away from IF-A late

IOWA FALLS — The seventh-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team put Iowa Falls-Alden away here in the fifth with a big inning.

Leading 3-1, the Gaels exploded for seven runs in the fifth on their way to a 10-1 victory over the Cadets.

Mariah Myers and Hadley Oswald both hit home runs, as Myers finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Oswald drove in four.

Lauren Gibb was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and two steals, as Ansley Oswald plated a pair of runs. Gibb and Rihanna Myers both recorded doubles.

Inside the circle, Toryn Helle struck out five with three hits and no walked allowed.

Myrah Lemon scored twice and Sophia Schlienz added an RBI. All nine St. Edmond (16-9 overall, 7-1 in league) batters recorded a hit as Rihanna Myers added and RBI.

“It was great to see us continue the momentum we started Monday at the plate,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We looked for our pitches and we really got after it there in the fifth.

“I thought Toryn looked great out there. She was really hitting her spots and our defense played flawless behind her.”

The Gaels are currently a half-game back of Clear Lake for the NCC lead, as both teams have one loss. The Lions (13-6, 8-1), who won the first of two games with St. Edmond, are a game up in the win column.

Next action for the Gaels will be Wednesday when they travel to Webster City beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
