HUMBOLDT — The No. 7 (Class 2A) Webster City boys soccer team put the finishing touches on a perfect North Central Conference run, downing rival Humboldt, 2-0.

Eddy Fuentes-Cruz, who made history by becoming just the fifth Iowa high school boy to reach 100 career goals, added two more to his total to lead the Lynx (14-0 overall, 11-0 in the league).

Israel Torres found Fuentes-Cruz 10 minutes into the match for the first goal, with Fuentes-Cruz taking it in himself 13 minutes later. The senior now has a career-high 38 goals on the year.

“I was impressed with the maturity and mentality of the team playing a match with a 30-to-40 mile-per-hour cross-wind,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “They didn’t mention it once, didn’t use it as an excuse and just went out and dealt with it.”

Webster City has now won 31 of its last 33 NCC matches, earning at least a share of three consecutive league titles.

They finished with 23 shots and 10 on goal vs. Humboldt (6-8-1, 5-4), who had just five shots with three coming on goal against Edwin Ramos Nolasco.

“Our back line was solid,” Signorin said. “Dany and Henry worked really hard in the middle. I would have liked to have finished a couple more chances we created, but we just weren’t as focused when we got closer to goal.

“Edwin had an unbelievable game with several really good saves.”

The Lynx now prepare for the postseason, which begins Tuesday, May 27 vs. the winner between Clear Lake and Decorah. A rematch with No. 9 Aplington-Parkersburg could be in the finals for a bid to the state tournament.

Starting at $2.99/week.
