State track qualifier list solidified for this week

Following a busy night of action across the state, qualifiers for all four classes were announced on Friday for the upcoming track and field championships.

The three-day event begins this Thursday from Drake Stadium in Des Moines, and concludes Saturday afternoon.

Fort Dodge will be represented by Noah Daniel, as the junior has qualified in Class 4A in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Daniel comes in with the 10th-fastest qualifying time in both events.

The St. Edmond boys added two at-large bids to Aaron Hindt’s 100 and 200 district titles. Anthony Valles will compete in the 3,200, and the 4×400-meter relay also advanced.

For the Gael girls, they will have seven events in all, led by Anna Lursen’s three individual bids. Lursen is seeded first in the 800, third in the 400 and 16th in the 400 hurdles.

Mariah Myers, a senior who has committed to the University of Iowa for softball, returns in both the discus and shot put. She had the best discus throw at districts with a toss of 132-4, and the second-best shot put attempt at 40-1.75.

Josie Harvey, a medalist last year, qualified again in the 100 hurdles for St. Edmond. The sprint medley relay — seeded seventh with Harvey and Lursen being joined by Faith Shirbroun and Sasha Hess — also clinched a berth for St. Edmond.

Algona leads the way with 23 combined qualifiers in 3A, followed by Manson Northwest Webster’s 12 in 2A. Humboldt secured nine bids in 3A, as did Newell-Fonda and Bishop Garrigan in 1A.

South Central Calhoun has eight and Southeast Valley seven in 2A. Emmetsburg punched six through.

In 1A, West Bend-Mallard has six.
