Local wrestlers shine at AAU state

A number of Fort Dodge-area youth wrestlers shined at the Iowa AAU state championships last weekend in Des Moines.

Current Dodger sophomore Joe Constable doubled up with both 16U freestyle and Greco titles at 285 pounds. FDSH freshman Damien Yeoman did the same at 100 pounds in the 16U bracket.

Lehigh’s Owen Slinker (Southeast Valley) swept the freestyle and Greco crowns in the 10U division.

Fort Dodge sophomore Trace Rial won the 113-pound Greco crown in the Junior bracket, and placed fifth in freestyle. Knox Ayala, an eighth grader from Fort Dodge, earned the 94-pound gold in the 16U freestyle division.

Louis Taylor of Fort Dodge (12U, 63-pound freestyle), Kain Mendez (12U, 58-pound freestyle) and Anthony Goodpaster (14U, 126-pound freestyle) also prevailed in their respective brackets.

Local runner-ups at state included Mariaha Benedict (Junior, 135-pound freestyle); Boe Davis (14U, 110-pound freestyle); Joe Birkett (12U, 98-pound Greco); Urijah Ayala (12U, 82-pound freestyle); Lukas Benedict (10U, 67-pound freestyle and Greco); and Haze McClintock (10U, 53-pound freestyle).

Third-place efforts came from Allison Birkett (14U, 115-pound freestyle); Karson Wuebker (16U, 106-pound freestyle); Lincoln Pochinski (16U, 88-pound freestyle); Isaac Benedict (14U, 75-pound freestyle and Greco); and Zayden Ayala (12U, 70-pound freestyle).

Other local placewinners included Mark Crimmins (14U, 92-pound Greco, 5th place); Hudson Burns (14U, 75-pound freestyle, 5th place); Joe Birkett (12U, 98-pound freestyle, 5th place); Creo Davis (12U, 86-pound freestyle, 6th place); and Matthew Crimmins (16U, 144-pound freestyle, 7th place).
