IOWA CENTRAL WOMEN COAST TO 83-32 VICTORY

As far as home openers go, first-year Iowa Central women’s head coach Graham McFall could not have scripted it any better.

The Tritons raced out to a 20-2 lead after 10 minutes of action here Friday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse, posting a one-sided 83-32 victory over Central Lakes-Brainerd in the Great Western Classic.

Ashlin Jacobsen led four players in double figures with 19 points, knocking down three of the 13 made 3-pointers for Iowa Central (2-1 overall). Amelia Echternkamp scored 13, Kaydence Nicholas added 12 with six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and 6-foot-6 sophomore Ashleigh Kerr scored 10 with nine rebounds.

For Central Lakes-Brainerd, Lex Vesel had nine points and Alyssa Wright eight with 11 rebounds.

Jacobsen, Echternkamp and Trista Ohlmeier each scored four points in the opening quarter, as the Triton defense held Central Lakes-Brainerd to 1 of 15 shooting from the floor. They also dominated on the glass, as Ohlmeier grabbed eight rebounds, with four coming on the offensive end.

“It was great to see the unselfish play,” McFall said. “We spaced the floor, moved the ball well and shot it with confidence.

“It was also great to see the dominance on the boards with 49 rebounds.”

As a team, Iowa Central finished with a plus-20 advantage on the glass, including an 18-3 edge in offensive rebounds. They also dished out 18 assists while committing just five turnovers.

Ohlmeier, the lone former Iowa high school standout on the roster, had a game-high 14 rebounds and Nicholas added six rebounds with three assists and three steals. Shakani Murray contributed eight points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal.

The Tritons have won two straight since a 59-45 loss at No. 14 Lincoln Land, as they now prepare for Metropolitan back here on Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m.

Iowa Central closes out the month with three consecutive road games in three different states, playing in Wisconsin vs. Madison College, Illinois vs. Sauk Valley and Nebraska vs. Northeast.
