Gael girls turn in record-breaking day at NCC meet

IOWA FALLS — The St. Edmond girls track and field team had a record-breaking North Central Conference meet here on Thursday night.

Taking advantage of ideal weather conditions and a strong field of competitors, the Gaels broke two league marks and a school record.

Anna Lursen had a leg in both of top performances, setting a new NCC mark in winning the 800-meter run in 2:15.85. the junior also ran the anchor on the sprint medley that bested the old conference record and set a new school best in 1:50.58.

Joining Lursen were classmate Faith Shirbroun and seniors Sasha Hess and Josie Harvey on the winning relay.

Senior Mariah Myers placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put.

St. Edmond tied Webster City for fourth overall. Clear Lake finished in first place, with Algona second and Humboldt third.

Ava Bradley, Naomi Valles, Brianna Saathoff and Lursen were runners-up in the 4×400-meter relay. Harvey placed third in the 100 hurdles, and the 4×200 of Shirbroun, Bradley, Myrah Lemon and Saathoff took third.

McKenna Kvale, Lemon, Alex Leiting and Valles placed fourth in the distance medley relay, with Harvey adding sevenths in the 100 and 200. Lily Eslick placed seventh in the 1,500 and 3,000.

“The girls keep getting better and better,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “Their work ethic and determination is leading to the results they are getting. We had many PRs and even broke a couple of NCC meet records.

“Now, we use this upcoming time to get ready for next week. This is what we’ve been working towards all year long.”

St. Edmond’s junior varsity sprint medley relay followed the varsity quartet in placing first courtesy of Kvale, Bradley, Saathoff and Valles. Emmersyn Peters was second in the junior varsity 100.

Algona was led by Natalie Johnson, as she won two individual events and anchored a pair of relays to gold. Johnson finished first in the 100 and 200.

Lillian Allie, Kaitlyn Burns and Summer Thompson joined Johnson on the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Charli Dodds, Andi Jensen, Malyn Davis and Macy Knapp captured the 4×800, while Knapp placed second in the 800. Maya Lentz was the high jump runner-up and finished third in the long jump.

The Algona shuttle hurdle relay added a second.

Bulldog Mara Davis was third in the 3,000 to go along with bronze performances from the AHS distance medley and 4×400 relays.

Humboldt’s Aubry Fisher scored silver in both the 1,500 and 3,000, and the distance medley relay also finished second. Brynn Malo added a third in the 800.

For Webster City, Cloe Savitski was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200, Isabel Grossoehme was second in the 400 and eighth in the 800, and both the 4×100 and sprint medley relays placed third.

MaKayla Beisel led Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, as she won the high jump and finished behind Clear Lake standout and Kansas State University commit Reese Brownlee for second in both the 100 and 400 hurdles.

Next action for the Gaels will be on Thursday, May 15, when the head to Armstrong for a Class 1A state-qualifying meet.
