Dodger girls advance with shutout

The Fort Dodge girls tennis team secured a 5-0 victory over Sioux City West here Friday in Class 2A team regional action.

With the win, the Dodgers advance to face Waukee Northwest on Tuesday in Urbandale.

Manuela Rodriguez, Amy Muftillaeva, Grace Behrens, Lacey Larson and Janelle Derrig each scored straight-set wins in singles to clinch the dual before other matches could be completed.

Rodriguez won at the No. 1 position over Junie Roach, 6-1, 6-0, Muftillaeva claimed a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Behrens won 6-0, 6-1, Larson won 6-0, 6-0 and Derrig picked up a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.

“Great team effort,” FDSH head coach Julie Astor said. “The girls came ready to play and took care of business. It was good to see them stay focused and not let their opponent gain any momentum.

“Manuela had a solid showing, Amy started off a little tight but fought through it and Grace, Lacey and Janelle all looked really good.”
