Dodgers can’t hang on vs. SC West

SIOUX CITY — The Fort Dodge boys basketball team ran into an opponent with every bit as much hunger and desperation here on Friday evening.

The end result was a comeback win for Sioux City West.

The Wolverines rallied from a double-digit second half deficit, then scored the contest’s final four points in the last minute to edge the Dodgers, 59-57.

Head coach Willie Williams’ squad seemed to be in prime position to pick up their second victory of the season, and had West on the ropes multiple times both early and late.

Instead, the Wolverines (1-7 overall) found a way on their home court to end their season-long drought and extend Fort Dodge’s slide to three this week.

“We had the energy and the effort,” Williams said. “But the execution just wasn’t there when it had to be. We had critical turnovers with the game on the line. We just didn’t get it done and finish it out the last few minutes.

“We’re still learning how to win. We knew they were going to be really motivated, too. They closed the game out when we couldn’t.”

Senior Cade Westerhoff led all scorers with 25 points for the Dodgers (1-8). Classmate Carter Woodruff added 10.

Tre Craft, who sealed the victory at the free throw line late, paced West with 18 points. Four different Wolverines had at least nine.

“Cade had an outstanding offensive game,” Williams said. “Carter played hard. Cade, Kauner (Jensen) and (Taevon) Feeley rebounded well. Tisyn (Hook) gave us good minutes off the bench.

“These kids care. They’re taking it hard. We just have to stay the course and keep getting better. All of us. There are just little things that are the difference, and we have to keep doing those more and more, because we aren’t right now.”

Fort Dodge had 19 points in the first quarter and 18 more in the third period, capped by a long Hayden Zuspann three-pointer for a 49-44 advantage. The Dodgers were up 17-2 early, and after West got within five, the visitors went back ahead 41-28 midway through the third.

FDSH only had two points in the closing three minutes of regulation, though. The Wolverines’ lead in the closing seconds was their first — and only — of the night.

The Dodgers’ next game is Tuesday at Des Moines East. They also host Des Moines Hoover on Friday.
