Laufersweiler, Derrig earn district honors
St. Edmond seniors Hayden Derrig and JT Laufersweiler were among 10 area players named all-district by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Derrig and Laufersweiler were named in Class 1A along with Bishop Garrigan’s Justin Bauer and Dan Meis. In 3A, Algona’s Tate Slagle and Aiden Ulrich were joined by Humboldt’s Corey Dettmann and Mason Van Pelt on the first team. Eagle Grove’s Jake Jeske and South Central Calhoun’s Andrew Anderson landed 2A spots.
Earning second team honors were 3A’s Tate Garman of Algona and Evan Hatcher from Humboldt, while Caydin Anderson of Manson Northwest Webster, Syrus Willard of Eagle Grove, Carson Nesheim from Clarion-Goldfield/Dows, Kaden Dorman of South Central Calhoun, Emmetsburg’s Gavin Swanson and Bronson Dietrich were honored from 2A.
Making the second squad in 1A were Bishop Garrigan’s Tate Foertsch, North Union’s Talon Priester and Newell-Fonda’s Max Carlson and Mason Hoberman. Mitch Stevens from West Bend-Mallard was an honorable mention selection.
Derrig, who also was unanimously selected to the all-North Central Conference team, hit .410 with 25 hits, 19 runs, 17 steals and 16 walks. On the mound, the senior was 6-4 with one save, 108 strikeouts and a 1.69 earned run average.
Laufersweiler, also a senior, hit a team-leading .433 with 26 hits, 21 runs, 15 RBI, 11 steals and two home runs. He also had a win on the mound and two saves.
Slagle, a junior who has already committed to the University of Iowa, led Algona to the NCC regular season title. He hit .481 with 50 hits, 45 RBI, 35 walks, 31 steals, 12 doubles, seven homers and five triples while going 8-0 on the mound with a save and 106 strikeouts.
Ulrich, also a junior, had a 7-2 record with 77 strikeouts while hitting .436 with 41 hits, 45 RBI, 26 walks, 11 doubles and four homers.
Dettmann, a senior, had a .380 average with 30 hits, 23 RBI, 10 doubles and three homers. Van Pelt, a junior, had a .338 average with 33 runs, 27 hits, 20 walks, 16 steals and 10 RBI.
Anderson hit .484 with 31 runs, 30 hits, 16 walks, 11 steals, 11 RBI and eight doubles. The junior also had a 3-0 record with two saves and 42 strikeouts on the mound.
Jeske put together a senior season that included a .529 batting average, 29 steals, 27 RBI, 26 runs and 17 walks while going 3-3 on the mound with 59 strikeouts.
Bauer, a senior, finished with a 7-0 record and 48 strikeouts with a 1.16 earned run average. At the plate, he hit .402 with 40 steals, 40 hits, 22 walks and 14 RBI. Meis, a junior, went 8-2 with 100 strikeouts on the mound.
