CEDAR RAPIDS — Eddie Doyle has experienced a hectic — yet very rewarding — last few weeks.
Doyle, a Fort Dodge resident and St. Edmond High School graduate, earned one of three spots in the U.S. Mid-Amateur during a qualifying event here Monday at Elmcrest Country Club.
Doyle finished tied for second with Andrew Huseman, the son of Fort Dodge businessman Bill Huseman and grandson of Fort Dodge Senior High Hall of Famer Dutch Huseman.
Joshua Janeczko carded a 4-under round of 66 to place first with Doyle and Huseman right behind with matching scores of 3-under 67. The field featured over 60 golfers competing for one of the three spots.
“I was a nervous wreck waiting for scores to come in,” Doyle said. “I was the first group off for the day and had to wait for everyone else to finish to know if I was in.
“But I was so pumped. It still hasn’t soaked in yet.”
All three are now headed for the 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship Sept. 21-26 in Manakin-Sabot, Va. at the Kinloch Golf Club. The winner of that earns a spot in The Masters.
Doyle had a 31 on the front nine, including four birdies. He then recorded a 36 on the back that included eight straight pars.
Huseman, meanwhile, had four birdies on the back, highlighted by consecutive birdies on the final three holes.
“I got to 4-under after seven and just played solid the rest of the way,” Doyle said. “It might have been the hottest day I’ve ever golfed in. I made a bad bogey, the only one of the day, on 18 and thought it was gonna cost me the qualifier. But the wind picked up and it got hotter. I saw some people drop off toward the top.
“I have been playing really good golf lately. I shot 7-under at the Northwest Am in Spencer a few weeks ago to get ninth. I’m super confident over the ball right now, and that’s so important to playing good golf.”
Doyle and girlfriend Morgan Border, also a St. Edmond grad, welcomed a daughter earlier this month.
“The last two weeks might be the best two weeks of my life,” Doyle said. “We had Penelope on the 13th and qualified for a USGA Championship two weeks later, and both Penelope and Morgan are going to come out (to Virginia next month) and watch.
“A year ago, if someone told me I was gonna be a dad and play in a USGA Championship in the same year, I would have said you were crazy.”
