Tritons in action at NJCAA tennis

PLANO, Tex. — Amen Prince Gandonou and Hod’Abalo Isak Padio have reached the semifinals in doubles at the NJCAA Div. I Tennis Championships.

The Iowa Central duo will face Charlie Brady and Matias Ruiz from Jones College here Thursday at 11 a.m.

In the first round, Gandonou and Padio posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over a pair from College of Lake County. In the second round, they knocked off the six-seed of Victor Alves and Fernando Andre from Barton, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

The Triton duo pulled their biggest upset of the tournament in the quarters, claiming a three-set victory over Alex Despoja and Juan Carlos Garcia from Tyler. Despoja and Garcia were the three-seed, as Gandonou and Padio won 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4).

Brady and Ruiz are the No. 7 seed and earned a three-set win over Jose Castillo and Minjae Kim of Collin, the two-seed, in the quarterfinals.

In the other semifinal, No. 1 seed Reiya Komagata and Bruno Nhavene of Cowley will take on Samuel Antwi and Cem Atlamis, the five-seed, from Seward County.

Iowa Central’s Derrick Namanya and Caleb Peterson went 1-1 in the second flight doubles draw while Tadeo Missan and Mariano Orsini Rodriguez reached the quarterfinals in the third flight.

Padio, Gandonou, Peterson, Namanya and Rodriguez all went 1-1 in singles while Missan reached the quarters at No. 5 singles.
