Gael softball team defeats PAC, 12-1

The sixth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team officially got in the win column here Thursday night, besting Pocahontas Area, 12-1 in six innings at Rogers Park.

Faith Shirbroun hit a home run to lead things off for the Gaels (1-0 overall), who had their opener postponed due to weather earlier this week.

Mariah Myers was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a steal, Kaili Henning drove in three and struck out seven, and eighth-grader Toryn Helle and Payton Bradley each drove in two.

St. Edmond scored in five of six innings.

Lauren Gibb added two hits with three runs and an RBI.

“We put things together at the plate,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “It’s still early, and we’re working on getting into a flow. I think the girls are used to playing almost every night instead of having this many days between games.

“I liked the approach we had and the way many of the girls hit the ball all over the field.”

Myers, who has committed to the University of Iowa, hit a home run in her first official at-bat as a Gael vs. Newell-Fonda. She was intentionally walked after that.

The Indians (1-1) chose not to walk her once on Thursday.

Bradley scored twice and drew a pair of walks.

“We got some of the younger girls in to run which was great,” Shirbroun said. “I thought even our outs were hard-hit balls that just went right to the defense.

“Kaili looked good. She hasn’t had a lot of pitching yet, but she worked out of some situations.”

Henning struck out seven and walked two, allowing just three hits. The lone Pocahontas Area run was unearned.

For the Indians, Amanda Davis, Katie Rierson and Katelyn Bunda each had a hit. Samantha Wolter drove in Jacalyn Sobotka for the lone run.

The Gaels head to Clear Lake Friday night to begin defense of their North Central Conference title. The Indians host South Central Calhoun that same night.
