Heartbreak for Dodgers on backside

DES MOINES — Fort Dodge Seniors Kane Butrick and Cal Hartman wanted to finish their final season in Dodger singlets as state medalists.
The two-time state qualifiers didn’t get that opportunity, as they lost in heartbreaking fashion during the bloodround of Class 3A action on Friday inside Wells Fargo Arena.
Sophomore Luke Fierke (285) also came up just short in medal contention.
“This is the best that Kane has wrestled,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “In my 32 years of coaching, Kane, Cal and Luke are three of the best wrestlers I’ve had that didn’t reach the podium.”
Hartman (35-12), who placed seventh as a junior, went 2-2 in this year’s tourney. He dropped his 190-pound consolation bloodround match to Johnston’s Kolby Gibbons by a 1-0 count in double overtime.
The two went back and forth, going scoreless through three periods. Neither wrestler scored in SV-1.
Gibbons escaped Hartman’s hold in the first 30 seconds of TB-1, and Hartman was unable to break Gibbons’ hold.
In his consolation wins, Hartman pinned Clear Creek-Amana’s Ethan Williams in 1:41 and edged Waverly-Shell Rock’s Zander Wedemeier, 5-3.
Hartman finishes his career with a record of 115-58. He is 19th on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list.
Butrick (36-9) had a tough foe in Southeast Polk’s Justis Jesuroga (26-8).
Jesuroga built a lead early and Butrick wasn’t able to quite catch him, dropping an 8-6 contest.
Fierke (34-11), who earned the fifth seed at 285 pounds, lost by fall to Jaxson Boyd (34-11) of Indianola (5:58). It was a tight match until the end, as the familiar opponents had grappled to a 1-1 tie before Boyd flopped Fierke to his back.
“Luke is going to have to have a growth mindset,” Thompson said. “He pinned four guys this year that will be on the podium.
“He has to let that stick in his craw and use that for the next two years.”
Seven of Fort Dodge 11 state qualifiers will be back next season. Fierke will be joined by freshman Trace Rial (106) and sophomores Sam Davidson (126), Rylee Brown (144), and Jesse Egli (157).
Two-time state finalists Koy Davidson (138) — a junior — and Dreshaun Ross (215) — a sophomore — will also return.
Thompson is losing Hartman, Butrick, state finalist Damarion Ross and two-time gold-medal round qualifier Dru Ayala.
“Cal and Kane have meant a lot to this program. They had great senior years, along with obviously Damarion and Dru,” Thompson said. “We have quite a few guys coming back, but the seniors have led the way.”
