No. 11 Tritons ready for Game One Bowl

CEDAR FALLS — For one final time this season, the 11th-ranked Iowa Central football team will put their helmets on and go to battle.

The Tritons take on No. 5 Snow here Sunday in the 45th Game One Bowl from inside the UNI-Dome.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Iowa Central (6-4 overall) has won each of its last five bowl games under head coach Jesse Montalto, who is a perfect 9-0 in his career in the postseason. Overall, the Tritons have won 12 consecutive bowls and are 18-9 all-time in the UNI-Dome.

“To get to seven wins and finish in the Top-10 would be a pretty good deal for these kids considering all the injuries we’ve dealt with,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “They’ve worked hard and we are excited to give them this opportunity to compete again.

“This is all about them getting one more chance to put together more film to showcase what they can do out there on the field. That is our ultimate goal here.”

Led by reigning ICCAC offensive MVP Mario Sanders, Iowa Central has scored over 40 points three times this year, including a season-high 62 in a win over Ellsworth.

Sanders, who recently committed to the University of Illinois, has 70 catches for 926 yards with 12 touchdowns. Justin Silverstein has been the anchor at quarterback, throwing for over 1,800 yards with 17 touchdowns.

Before falling to top-ranked Hutchinson, the Tritons posted victories over Independence and Garden City. They also downed Coffeyville, Ellsworth, reigning NJCAA Div. III champion College of DuPage and Highland.

Snow’s (9-2) lone losses have come against the Reivers and Trinity Valley, who is rated ninth. The Badgers featured quarterback Donovan Smith, who has thrown for almost 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns against just six interceptions.

Jared Wilson has 596 yards and nine touchdowns receiving with Amir McGruder adding 452 and five. Spencer Lambert leads the team in rushing with 640 yards and AJ Tillman has scored 10 TDs.

Snow opened the year with a seven-point loss to Trinity Valley, winning four in a row before falling to Iowa Western by seven. They topped the likes of No. 15 New Mexico Military, seventh-ranked Dodge City, No. 12 George Military, 14th-rated Lackawanna and Garden City during the year.

“Everything Snow does is at a high level,” Montalto said. “They are similar to Iowa Western in a lot of things and just missed out on making the playoffs. We know this is a tremendous challenge and test for our kids.”

This marks the third meeting between the two, with the Badgers winning the previous games in 2019 (30-20) and 2021 (48-18).
