Fort Dodge girls tipped at Waterloo East
WATERLOO — The Fort Dodge girls came up short in their second straight road test on Friday, falling at Waterloo East by a final of 48-45.
The Dodgers (3-2 overall) missed a late field goal attempt in a 47-45 contest, ending their two-game win streak.
“We had the ball with about 18 seconds left, and we got a good look,” said FDSH head coach Scott Messerly. “We led most of the game until the fourth quarter. Our biggest lead was five, but for the most part, it was two or three.”
The Dodgers took leads into both the second and fourth quarters.
“We had trouble with their press,” Messerly admitted. “A couple of times they pressed us, not aggressively, but they threw a trap around half court. We just dribbled around too much when we could have reversed it a few possessions. We got dribble happy.”
Sophomore LJ Maehl recorded a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Mackenzie McIlrath had her third straight double-digit outing with 10 points.
Meah McCaleb added six points and eight rebounds, while Brooklyn Pommer pulled down seven rebounds.
Waterloo East (2-3) was led by Graysyn Downing and Jaelah Stanford, who had 14 points each. Ja’Miah Ceaser contributed nine, and Siyanna Cody eight.
“Our starters played hard all the way to the end,” Messerly said. “We just got beat. We could have done a few things differently here and there.”
Fort Dodge was again without junior starter Ashlyn Wills, who is expected to return from injury this coming week.
The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they host Humboldt. Tip is set for 6:15 p.m.
