Seven in a row for No. 6 Gaels

For the second straight night and third consecutive game, the sixth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team claimed a run-rule victory.

Toryn Helle hit her third home run in the last two games, Faith Shirbroun and Ella Vandi had a combined four hits, four runs scored and three RBI, and the Gaels remained undefeated on the young season with an 11-3 victory in five innings over Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Wednesday night at Rogers Park.

After hitting a pair of homers on Tuesday versus Southeast Valley, Helle went deep in her second plate appearance of the night vs. the Bulldogs. The sophomore also improved to 7-0 inside the circle, spinning three innings of one-hit softball with a pair of strikeouts.

St. Edmond (7-0 overall, 2-0 in North Central Conference) jumped on the Bulldogs early, as Vandi had a two-out, two-RBI triple in the first that scored Sophia Schlienz and Shirbroun.

Helle had her three-run homer in the second as part of a five-run inning and the Gaels were off once again.

“I thought we played pretty well overall,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We’ve got some games coming up here that are going to really test us and show us what we need to work on, but we took care of business (Wednesday night).”

Shirbroun, Vandi and Breckyn Ulrich each had two hits, as Ulrich also scored two runs and stole two bases. Schlienz and Rihanna Myers each scored twice, as Myers also had a triple.

“We’ve been doing a decent job at the plate,” Shirbroun said. “We’ve got to continue to play our style of softball, though, especially against some of these tougher teams we have on the schedule coming up. That’s why it is so important that we get bunts down and move runners when we try it each time out.”

Helle allowed a single to start the game, but a heads-up defensive play by the infield allowed for her to finish her night by getting all nine batters she faced out. Ulrich came on, pitching the final two without allowing an earned run.

“There were a couple things there when we moved people around that we’ve got to clean up,” Shirbroun said. “It was good to see it happen because now we know what we need to do in that situation.”

St. Edmond will travel to Webster City on Friday before heading to Remsen for the CYO on Saturday to face No. 15 (4A) Bishop Heelan at noon and 15th-ranked (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s at 2 p.m.
