No. 10 Gaels quiet Bulldogs, 10-0

Kaili Henning twirled a two-hitter, five different players drove in runs and the 10th-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team stretched their win streak to double digits with a 10-0 win in five over Algona here Monday night at Rogers Park.

Henning improved to 6-0 on the year with five strikeouts and no walks, helping her own cause at the plate for the Gaels (10-1 overall, 5-0 in North Central Conference) with two hits and three RBI.

Lauren Gibb had two doubles and scored twice, Ansley Oswald drove in two with two hits and scored twice, and Hadley Oswald had a triple and a double. Michaela Leiting scored twice, as did Faith Shirbroun.

“That’s what I’ve been waiting to see out of this team,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “When we get the chance to put teams away, we do it. The girls really attacked and hit the ball well, Kaili was strong again and our defense played another great game.

“We had a big weekend and we have a big week ahead of us, so to get this NCC win feels great.”

St. Edmond jumped on the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2) in the first, as Shirbroun was hit and scored on an error-filled play one batter later. Gibb and Ansley Oswald had back-to-back doubles in the third and the Gaels quickly led 3-0.

Henning, who picked up all five of her strikeouts in the first three innings, kept Algona’s top hitters off the bases, with Payton Bradley turning an inning-ending double-play in the third.

“Kaili just continues to hit her spots,” Shirbroun said. “She is pitching with so much confidence and the defense is backing her up.”

The Gaels put the game out of reach with a six-run fourth highlighted by a two-RBI single from Henning. Shirbroun, Bradley and Ansley Oswald each drove in a run during the rally.

In the fifth, eighth-grader Myrah Lemon put an end to the contest early, driving in Leiting with one out.

For the Bulldogs, Ryan Haynes and Ashley Cantu each had a hit.

St. Edmond will now prepare for Tuesday night and a meeting with intra-city rival and second-ranked (4A) Fort Dodge. The junior varsity/varsity doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m.
