Dodger girls rout Des Moines East

DES MOINES — It was a banner night for the Fort Dodge girls basketball program on Monday, and more specifically, the Maehl sisters.

For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the Dodgers (10-5 overall) have reached double-digit victories. They rolled past winless Des Moines East by a final of 76-16.

“We are playing pretty well together,” said FDSH head coach Scott Messerly. “We can go about eight deep, and the kids are comfortable with knowing their roles. We challenge them and they answer the call.

“They all do certain things well. Meah (McCaleb) had 10 points (last night), but when she’s not scoring, she’s getting assists or playing tough defense. We usually put her or Kenzie (McIlrath) on the other team’s best guard.”

All five Fort Dodge starters scored double digits on the night. Freshman LJ Maehl led the way with 17 points, while McIlrath, a junior, had 16.

“Kenzie shot the ball well,” Messerly said. “We had an inside, outside thing going on.

“Everyone played well and it was nice to be able to get everyone in the game.”

Senior Lainey Maehl had 14 and classmate Paytene Hiveley had 12. McCaleb, a sophomore, also reached double figures.

“We played pretty well for the most part,” Messerly said. “East didn’t do a good job of getting back and we were looking for each other (on fast breaks up the court). Meah had seven assists. Lainey had five steals and five boards.”

Lainey Maehl became the 22nd Dodger 5-on-5 player to pass the career 500-point plateau. Her 14 points now puts her at 511 for her career.

LJ Maehl is now at 155 points this season, one point behind Morgan (Paulson) Lehman’s freshman record of 156, set 21 years ago.

“They (Maehl sisters) know each other so well from hours of practice and playing together,” Messerly said. “Lainey had a really solid junior year and has been asked to score more this season. With LJ in the mix, I think it helps the teamwork and communication. They’re both very unselfish players.”

Hiveley now has 451 career points and is 26th on the FDSH scoring list. She also pulled down 10 rebounds on Monday.

The Dodgers burst out to a 30-4 lead at the end of the first period and held a 49-8 advantage at the half. Fort Dodge gave up only four points per quarter.

Next action for the Dodgers is Friday at Waterloo East.
