Tritons play for berth at nationals
A trip to nationals is on the line for the fifth-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Iowa Central volleyball team here Wednesday night.
The Tritons host No. 12 Hawkeye inside Hodges Fieldhouse in the Region XI-A championship.
Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Iowa Central (33-5 overall) stretched its win match streak to 15 with a sweep of Southeastern. They went a perfect 9-0 — including a victory at Hawkeye — to capture a fifth consecutive ICCAC regular season title.
On the season, the Tritons are 11-1 at home. They have also secured regional bids each of the past two seasons at Hodges Fieldhouse and have not dropped a set to a conference opponent this year there.
“This group has done a really great job of appreciating our home matches,” ICCC head coach Sara Horn said. “I know we’re thankful for another chance to play in front of our home crowd on Wednesday for a shot at the national tournament.”
Iowa Central qualified last year for nationals, finishing fourth and winning 42 matches. The year before, they advanced and were third, going 22-4 in a shortened season.
In September, the Tritons went to Waterloo and topped Hawkeye in five, winning the fifth set, 15-9. Katilyn Steffes had 30 kills in that match, with both Jori Hajek and Brooke Dobson adding 16 each.
The NJCAA Div. II National Tournament takes place Nov. 17-19 in Cedar Rapids.
