Busy stretch for No. 5 Gaels

MANLY — The fifth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team made quick work out of Central Springs here Thursday night, posting an 11-0 victory in four innings.

Ella Vandi continued her hot streak at the plate, bashing a home run while going 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Gaels (17-3 overall), who have won five in a row and seven of eight.

Toryn Helle was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, as Faith Shirbroun drove in two and scored twice.

Jade Rock also crossed home twice, as Rihanna Myers added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.

“I thought our offense did a really nice job of being aggressive at the plate,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “Scoring four in the first set the tone, and we finished it off with six in the fourth.”

That was more than enough support for Breckyn Ulrich, as she pitched a one-hitter, striking out five with one walk.

Sophia Schlienz added a hit, an RBI and a run scored, as Ulrich also had a hit and scored a run. Grace Schlegel and Baylor Ulrich each scored once.

“Breckyn did a nice job of hitting her spots and mixing up her pitches,” Shirbroun said. “Once again, our defense backed her up by not committing an error.”

St. Edmond fell to Urbandale in its opening game of the Jack North Tournament in Waukee on Friday, 10-2 in six innings. Schlienz had two hits and scored a run, as Helle drove in a run. Shirbroun, Helle, Vandi, Myers, Myrah Lemon and Liv Andrew each had a hit, with Shirbroun stealing a base.

The Gaels finished off their day with a 9-0 loss to No. 11 (5A) Bettendorf in five. Rock and Helle had the lone hits, as Breckyn Ulrich and Shirbroun each stole a base.

“Playing against these 5A schools will only show us areas we can improve upon and make us that much better once postseason play starts,” Shirbroun said. “It’s tough competing at this tournament, but I also think it is a great way to earn and get better as a team.”

On Saturday, St. Edmond will play seventh-ranked (5A) Pleasant Valley at 2:15 p.m. and No. 6 (5A) Southeast Polk at 4 p.m.

Starting at $4.62/week.
