Fort Dodge girls can’t stop Rams

Scott Messerly was hoping his Fort Dodge girls basketball team could gain some momentum during a busy stretch of their season.

The Dodgers (6-10 overall) were playing their fifth game in seven days on Tuesday, but couldn’t match the intensity level of the Rams (8-7).

“I don’t think we regressed — I think we were just tired,” Messerly said. “Our legs just weren’t there and they took advantage.”

Fort Dodge started hot in the first eight minutes, but Southeast Polk’s height and outside shooting was simply too much in a 73-40 loss.

“We didn’t play well and we got discouraged when we got behind,” said Messerly. “This was looking like it could be a let-down game and we just didn’t play through it.”

The Dodgers started the contest with a 14-11 advantage after the first quarter on a sharp 6 of 9 shooting.

Southeast Polk then went on a 27-8 run to head into the locker room in full command.

Stella Charleston kicked off her torrid shooting streak in the second period. Charleston hit four three-pointers in the frame, while Brooklin Dailey had 11 points to go with Charleston’s 12 to build a 16-point halftime advantage for the visitors.

The Rams outscored the Dodgers 62-26 in the final three quarters.

Charleston ended with eight three pointers and 24 points. Dailey added 18.

Alyssa Bartlett also reached double figures with 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting.

Junior Paytene Hiveley came off the bench to lead the Dodgers with 10 points. Hiveley was 3-for-6 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.

Lainey Maehl was 4-for-6 from the floor with nine points. Aleah Pommer had seven and Tory Bennett six.
