HUMBOLDT — The St. Edmond boys were one of the smaller schools at the Humboldt Invitational on Tuesday, but the Gaels still came up big.

Seventh-ranked St. Edmond (118) finished second in the team field with five runners in the top-32 individually.

“I’m just so proud of all of our teams and the way they ran,” said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. “The boys taking second is just as impressive as the girls. It’s just unbelievable.”

Clear Lake (Class 3A) ran away with the title, accumulating 39 points. The Lions had runners place third, fourth, fifth, 12th and 15th, respectively.

Ryan Stundahl completed the individual crown sweep for Algona, winning with a time of 18:03.

Humboldt (140) was third, followed by Algona (170) and Pocahontas Area (174).

Junior Aaron Lursen turned in the top performance for the Gaels, recording an eighth-place performance. Lursen finished in 18:35.

Junior Ronnie Orres (19:29) and senior Hayden Mayer (19:35) were 24th and 26th, respectively. Drew Szalat (19:49) and Liam Shannon (19:58) were 28th and 32nd, respectively.

Thomas Cosgrove (19:59) and Zach Loerts (20:29) were 34th and 44th.

“Aaron is a competitor and gave it everything he had,” Szalat said. “Everyone just digs down and has a great mindset. Both Drew (Szalat) and Hayden (Mayer) ran two of their better races. Drew ran close to two minutes better than at Humboldt.

“Ronnie (Orres) is a tough competitor as well.”

Humboldt had three runners in the Top-25, led by runner-up Trevor Jacobson. The Wildcat senior finished in 18:14.

Wildcat classmate Jackson Chambers was ninth in 18:38, while fellow senior Carter Hatcher (19:25) placed 21st.

Stundahl’s teammate Jace Mortensen was 19th (19:22).

Pocahontas Area’s Ben Berte (19:23) and Adam Axman (19:25) were 20th and 22nd, respectively.

Webster City’s Jose Ramirez (18:23) and Cole Reiling (18:55) placed sixth and 11th. Bishop Garrigan’s Quinn Swift (18:25) took seventh.

Drake Weland earned the top finish for Eagle Grove, taking 10th in 18:50. Fabian Bowman (19:03) had the lead finish for Emmetsburg in 13th. North Union’s Nicholas Schiltz (19:04) was 14th.

Manson Northwest Webster’s Lane Moline (19:10) placed 16th.

Thirteen Messenger-area athletes were in the Top-20 on the boys side.

Fort Dodge freshman Micah Flaherty (20:34) crossed in 49th for the Dodgers, while classmate Tanner Teske (21:02) was 56th.

Both St. Edmond and Fort Dodge will be back in action on Monday as they compete in the Algona Invitational.
