Many of the best Iowa Central football players from its storied history will watch the current group of Tritons take the field this weekend.

A special reunion will take place bringing together players from each of the last four decades. The group will be honored during halftime of Saturday’s Top-10 showdown between No. 5 Iowa Central and ninth-ranked Iowa Western inside Dodger Stadium.

Other items on the agenda include a tour of for the former players of the current Iowa Central campus, special pre- and post-game celebrations and more.

Will Shupe, the son of legendary Triton head coach Paul Shupe, will be among those on hand.

“We are excited that so many former Triton greats will be in attendance this weekend,” said Kevin Twait, former Iowa Central head football coach and current Director of Athletics. “Most of these gentlemen played their football here in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

“They were coached by the legendary Paul Shupe, who is in the NJCAA Hall of Fame.”

Twait added that it is “important that we honor the past traditions of our athletic programs, and no program commanded more respect than Paul Shupe’s decorated football squads.”

“These men were the foundation of the ‘tradition of excellence’ that is associated with Iowa Central Triton Football,” said Twait, who was head coach from 1996 through 2017 and won 140 games at the helm.

In 1978, the Tritons claimed their only national title in program history. Current Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto has led the team to back-to-back Graphic Edge Bowl victories.
