Familiar names in action at state

DES MOINES — Wrestlers with Fort Dodge ties are scattered across the state tournament in Des Moines this weekend.

Ankeny Centennial has two state qualifiers who are sons of former Dodger wrestlers.

Jackson Helmkamp is the son of the late Brent Helmkamp, who was a state champion for Fort Dodge. Helmkamp qualified at 138 pounds for the Jaguars.

The junior (23-4) lost his first match in SV-1, 8-6 to Carter Drake of Carroll. Helmkamp bounced back with a fall in 1:38 over Fort Madison’s Gavin Wiseman.

Carter Bennett is a junior for the Jaguars. Bennett is the son of former Dodger Joe Bennett.

Carter’s grandparents, Mike and Marty Bennett, still live in Fort Dodge.

Bennett lost to second-ranked Caleb Rathjen (27-1) of Ankeny — a future Iowa Hawkeye — by fall.

Bennett lost by fall in the wrestleback match to Divion Ocheltree of Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Iowa City West junior Parker McBride is the son of Fort Dodge graduate Beth Bruhl. He is the nephew of Fort Dodge state champion Brad Bruhl.

McBride lost his first match to Travis Hodges of Davenport West by fall.

McBride bounced back with a fall in 2:53 over Carsen Newton of Iowa City High.
