Area wrestlers advance at state

CORALVILLE — The Humboldt girls wrestling team took over the Xtream Arena on Friday during the opening day of the IWOCA girls state tournament.

Fifteen of the Wildcat wrestlers competed on the opening day, going 9-5 overall. Defending state champion Kendal Clark (170) didn’t compete, and will make her debut in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Baylie Beers (126) and Maria Elizondo (160) were 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. Beers had three falls on the day, the first coming in 18 seconds. Elizondo had two pins.

Beers will now face Osage’s Emma Grimm. Elizondo will meet Mya Lindauer of Epworth Western Dubuque. Clark (12-1) squares off with Kylie Willems of AGWSR.

Lillian Morey and Alondra Torres had three wins each for the Wildcats.

Brett Harklau (13-9), Claire Weydert (11-10), Deni McDaniel (17-9), Alondra Torres (5-9), Kali Beaman (12-7) and Alexa Hemmelrick (5-13) all won a match as well.

South Central Calhoun

Evelyn Kramer (17-6) had a historic match after receiving a bye in the first round. Kramer lost a 33-28 decision to Laura Lefleur of Clear Creek-Amana. She bounced back with a fall.

Scout Rohlfs had a fall in 1:03 over Humboldt’s Abi Satern in the first round.

Delanie Westcott was 1-2 for the Titans.

Algona

Radaisyia Thomas earned a 14-second fall in her first match, but lost before bouncing back with another pin.

Sophie Degner (7-1) won her first match by fall. She lost in the third round before rebounding with a fall.

East Sac County

Kiersten Carroll (10-2) earned a bye in her opening-round match and then won a 1-0 tie-breaker before falling 3-1 in SV-1. She stayed alive with a fall in 1:07.

Olivia Villegas (13-6) had one victory for the Raiders.
