Dunlap, E-Hawks claim victory

EMMETSBURG — Ninth-ranked Emmetsburg made quick work out of upset-minded Carroll Kuemper, downing the Knights here Friday night, 42-14.

Ben Dunlap accounted for three touchdowns with Colby Weir, Lane Auten and Cole Shirk all adding a rushing touchdown each in the win.

The E-Hawks improve to 7-1 on the year.

Dunlap got the ball rolling with a TD run in the first with Weir following a few minutes later to make it 14-0.

After the Knights cut the deficit in half, Auten ran it in from 35 yards out. Dunlap connected with Matt Wirtz on a 31-yard TD pass before halftime, giving the E-Hawks a commanding 28-7 lead.

Dunlap found Ryan Brennan for a 72-yard touchdown strike in the third and Shirk added his rushing score later in the quarter.

“The win was great for us,” Dunlap said. “Everyone was ready to go from the first play and we finished 1-0 at the end of the night, which is always our goal.”

On the night, Dunlap finished 5-for-5 passing for 137 yards with three total touchdowns. He also had 4.5 tackles and an interception on defense.

“My perfect throwing night was possible because of our offensive line,” Dunlap said. “They gave me great protection all night long which made it possible for me to find the open receivers so they could make a play.

“It’s awesome getting the ball to our explosive speed guys to let them get to work in the open field.”

Shirk ran 15 times for 92 yards and the score, with Brennan finishing with three catches for 98 yards and a TD. Auten had 81 yards rushing.

Jordan Anderson and Ben Saxton each recorded a sack on defense, and Shirk also picked off a pass.

Carroll Kuemper, which stunned Pocahontas Area in the opening round of the playoffs, bows out at 2-7.
