Cowboys fight off Gael boys

CLARION — A spirited rally helped the St. Edmond boys push Clarion-Goldfield/Dows to overtime here Friday night.

But the Cowboys found their second wind in the extra period, claiming a 68-63 victory.

Coady Olson knocked down seven 3-pointers, finishing with a game-high 24 points to lead Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (6-3 overall, 3-3 in North Central Conference) to its second straight win.

Jaxon Carpenter added 13, Christian Gaytan 11 and Mateo Martinez 10 for the Cowboys, who have won five of their last seven overall.

After falling behind 36-27 at the half and 49-40 after three quarters of play, St. Edmond (1-7, 1-5) outscored C-G/D 21-12 in the fourth to force overtime.

“The kids played hard,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We just have to get over that hump. We had a nice comeback and that really got the kids fired up and excited.”

Drew Schaeffer had 18 points, Cael Kolacia 14 and Connor Bocken 13. Jerris Duncan, making his return to the lineup, added eight points, as did Hayden Mayer.

“We knocked down some shots there in the fourth and got stops on defense,” Kochendorfer said. “When you do that, everything falls into place.”

The Cowboys head to Pocahontas Area on Monday and are at Southeast Valley Tuesday before returning here next Friday to host Algona.

For the Gaels, they host Eagle Grove Monday, Manson Northwest Webster on Thursday and are at Iowa Falls-Alden next Friday.

“We’ll get back at it,” Kochendorfer said. “We continue to play hard and improve.”
