MARSHALLTOWN — Fort Dodge’s Grace Hartley and Eileen Fierke set personal times in the preliminary rounds of the state meet on Friday.

Both Hartley (junior) and Fierke (freshman) advanced to the consolation finals with Top-16 times.

Hartley swam a 2:11.35 in the 200 IM, breaking her school record, while placing 12th. Hartley was also 15th in the 500 freestyle (5:14.86).

“Grace is our most veteran state swimmer,” said Fort Dodge head coach Ashley Beaumont. “That was great to see her get the record and she was pretty confident heading into the 500.”

Fierke dropped nearly two seconds off her time in the 200 freestyle (1:55.53) and barely missed the finals (Top-8).

“It was awesome to see her get out so fast,” said Beaumont. “She set a good tone for the whole meet. She dropped two seconds and is in a good place for (Saturday).

“It’s great to see her come out and finish Top-10 in the prelims of her first race.”

Both Fierke and Hartley can place anywhere from ninth to 16th for the Dodgers. Fierke placed 21st in the 500 freestyle.

Senior Madigan Peimann was 26th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.85) and 27th in the 100 freestyle (55.45).

Senior Elora Fierke was 27th in the 200 IM (2:16.61).

“Madigan has been fighting sickness, but she had one of her best starting times all season,” Beaumont said. “She pushed hard and we can’t ask for much more than a senior.

“Elora swam so strong. She stayed up there and looked great swimming her race.”

The Dodgers will compete in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Eileen Fierke, Hartley, Elora Fierke and Madigan Peimann will swim the 400, while Peimann, Hartley, junior Rylie Steinkamp and Eileen Fierke are in the 200.

Fierke will be the first in the pool after the 200 medley relay and Hartley will follow with her 200 IM.

Action begins at noon.
