Flattery delivers in 8th for Gaels

ALGONA — In extra innings, it’s always nice to be able to lean on a senior.

St. Edmond head coach Nick Clark was able to do exactly that on Monday night, as the Gaels (4-4 overall, 2-1 North Central Conference) edged Algona 4-3 in eight innings on back of Erin Flattery.

With the score tied 3-3, two outs and two strikes on Flattery, she delivered a triple to the right corner of the outfield, just a foot inside the foul line. As the ball made into the field, it was bobbled by the second baseman and Clark didn’t hesitate to send Flattery, who came out of her slide and raced home for the eventual winning run.

“It was an awesome hit,” Clark said. “We led off the inning with the top of order and got to her with two outs and two strikes. She drove it right down the rightfield line and made it all the way to third. I gambled with the call and she got up and took off for home.”

Flattery ended the night 3-for-4, a home run shy of the cycle. She also scored two runs. Jocy Timmerman had two hits. Devyn Scott and Ella Vratny each contributed an RBI.

Vratny earned the win in the circle, giving up nine hits. She walked three and struck out 11.

The Gaels led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, when the Bulldogs plated two to tie the contest.

“Our girls had great energy all night long,” Clark said. “They all contributed in ways and we only had one error, which was a big improvement. Ella was real confident and battled all night.

“Kacey Kruthoff was phenomenal behind the plate. She blocked several pitches and didnt allow a runner to advance on her.”

The St. Edmond junior varsity team lost 12-10 to the Bulldogs. Allison Neiland drove in two runs.

The Gaels are back in action on Wednesday at Webster City.
