Dodgers can’t catch Bobcats
MARSHALLTOWN — For the second time this week, the Fort Dodge girls dropped a close contest on the road.
After losing to Des Moines Hoover this past Tuesday on a bucket in the final seconds, the Dodgers were unable to complete the comeback vs. Marshalltown, falling here Friday night inside the Roundhouse, 43-39.
Fort Dodge (0-8 overall, 0-2 in CIML Iowa Conference) rallied to tie it at 38-all, but it was the Bobcats who went on a 5-1 run to finish off their second victory of the season. The win was the first for Marshalltown (2-5, 1-0) at home since its home opener last season.
Cheyenne Miller-Hammed led FDSH with 14 points, while Tory Bennett added eight and Nicole Guerin had six.
Down by five entering the fourth, the Dodgers went on an 11-6 run to make it a tie game. Alyvia Chadderdon banked in a shot to break that tie and Erica Johnson followed with a pair of made free throws to make it a 42-38 Marshalltown advantage.
“Nicole Guerin hit a big 3-pointer, but we had a few too many chances that we came up empty on and had to foul,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “Marshalltown shot the ball really well and did a good job at the free throw line.”
Marshalltown made 16 shots from the line compared to eight by Fort Dodge. Chadderdon led the Bobcats with 13 points.
Miller-Hameed scored 10 in the first half as the Dodgers trailed, 23-20.
“The girls gave us good effort again,” Messerly said. “Cheyenne played a good game, Ebonee Altman had nine rebounds, but we just had too many turnovers late.”
Fort Dodge remains on the road, taking on No. 7 Southeast Polk Tuesday. The Dodgers host second-ranked West Des Moines Valley next Friday night to close out their pre-Christmas break schedule.
