Wegener, Grein lead Algona

CRESCO — Wyatt Wegener and the Algona football team are headed to the Class 2A quarterfinals following a convincing 45-20 victory over Crestwood here Friday night.

Wegener hauled in six passes from Matt Grein for 219 yards and three touchdowns, adding another 61 yards and a score on the ground in the win.

The No. 3 Bulldogs (9-1 overall) take on defending state champion and fourth-ranked Waukon (9-1) next Friday night after the Indians knocked off No. 6 Union, 40-11.

Grein, a senior, completed 9 of 16 passes for 237 yards and four touchdowns, adding a fifth score on the ground. The victory was the fourth playoff win all-time for Algona.

“This is a great win for our team and program moving forward,” Grein said. “I know all of these guys have put in the work and time for a long time, and it’s just awesome to see it all come together and turn into success.

“I’m so happy for these guys and can’t wait to compete next week.”

Wegener, a junior, now has over 900 yards receiving and almost 700 yards rushing with 24 touchdowns on the year.

“It feels amazing to do something with my team that Algona hasn’t done in a long time,” Wegener said. “We watched a lot of film and we saw a lot of things that we could do on their coverage. We had a good practice and executed well.”

Jacob Durant added 83 yards rushing and a score, with Carson Devine hauling in a touchdown pass.

Crestwood held a 7-6 lead early before the Bulldogs got going, racking up over 440 yards of total offense. They took control with a 24-14 halftime lead and never looked back.

Waukon went 12-1 last year, including a 29-0 victory in the state finals over Williamsburg.
