Triton athletes rack up honors

A pair of Iowa Central athletes were among those who were named NJCAA Players of the Week for their efforts on the field.

Sophomore Kryssie Okinaka was named the NJCAA Div. II Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, while sophomore Josh Precious earned NJCAA Div. I Men’s Soccer Goalie of the Week.

Okinaka was part of four wins in five matches for the No. 14 Triton volleyball team during the week, including a five-set victory over 15th-rated Hawkeye in an ICCAC battle.

In the win vs. Hawkeye, Okinaka — who was a member of both the ICCC volleyball and basketball teams last year — recorded a season-high 37 digs. She also had three aces in the match.

Okinaka picked up 28 digs vs. No. 16 Bismarck State, 24 vs. Lake Region State, 23 vs. 19th-ranked North Dakota Science and 29 vs. Miles.

Entering play Wednesday night, Okinaka ranked sixth in the nation in digs with 340 and 26th in digs per set at 5.23. Iowa Central faced league rival Ellsworth in Iowa Falls last night.

Precious, who is 5-1-1 on the year in net for the 13th-ranked Tritons, recorded a pair of clean sheets last week vs. Iowa Western (2-0) and Hawkeye (3-0) on the road.

In the victory against Iowa Western, Precious made five saves, picking up two against Hawkeye.

For the season, Precious has made 27 saves and allowed six goals. Like Okinaka, he also earned ICCAC honors for the past week.

Iowa Central is at Southeastern on Saturday before returning home to host NIACC next Wednesday.

Three other Triton players earned honors by the ICCAC this past week.

Blake Dever was named the ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week and Daquan Cross earned defensive player honors for the Iowa Central football team, which defeated College of DuPage last Saturday, 50-6.

Dever, a sophomore, completed 16 of 21 for 226 yards with two touchdowns, adding 23 yards and a pair of scores on the ground.

Cross was part of a defensive unit that limited DuPage to 85 total yards, as the freshman had eight tackles and returned an interception for a score.

The Tritons are off this week before hosting Highland next Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

Amaya Finley picked up the ICCAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week award after recording 20 kills vs. North Dakota Science and 27 vs. Hawkeye. The freshman currently ranks fifth in the country in kills and first in the ICCAC.
