Gael boys top Indians

Adolph Kochendorfer admitted that if you were to discuss Thursday night’s 78-68 victory for the St. Edmond boys a few hours after it ended, he’d give you a much better recap.

Andrew Gibb, Jackson Kochendorfer and Sean Flaherty all scored 20 points each, with Will Woodruff adding 11 and 17 rebounds, as the Gaels ended a four-game losing streak to Pocahontas Area.

“Honestly, I’m still kind of wired from that,” Kochendorfer admitted immediately afterwards. “We played a little too loose and got out of control at times.”

Kochendorfer, who has guided St. Edmond (11-8 overall) to another double-digit win total, gathered his thoughts after a brief moment.

“But a win is a win, especially against (Pocahontas Area) because we haven’t beat them in a while,” he said. “It’s turned into a bit of a rivalry game, so the kids were pretty fired up.

“At this point in the season, though, any victory you can get is a big win.”

The Indians, who had not lost to the Gaels since 2014, were led by Jace Davidson’s 24 points. Cam Callion added 16 and grabbed 14 rebounds. Davidson is the son of St. Edmond graduate Aaron Davidson.

Gibb posted 14 of his 20 in the opening half as the Gaels claimed a 39-22 advantage. Kochendorfer had 11 during the first 16 minutes, and also helped seal the win by making all six of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Earlier this week, St. Edmond fell to Webster City on a last-second shot. They are now 4-2 over the past six with two games left in the regular season.

“That was a tough one to lose (at Webster City),” Kochendorfer said. “I thought the kids did a good job of bouncing back and playing smart basketball for the most part. Pocahontas Area likes to make you play fast, but we were able to match that when we wanted to.

“We’ve just got to be stronger with the basketball and not get out of control.”

The Gaels turned the ball over 20 times, but were aided by five three-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field. Flaherty, a senior, was a key part to that, as he made all 10 of his field goals.

“Sean really stepped up,” Kochendorfer said. “He worked hard on the blocks, got some nice putbacks and made plays when we needed him to.”

Gibb also had five assists and Jed Tracy chipped in with four assists and three steals. Woodruff blocked three shots and dished out three assists.

Davidson had four steals and three assists on the night for the Indians, who had their four-game win streak snapped.

St. Edmond hosts Clear Lake in North Central Conference action Friday night, with Pocahontas Area heading to West Bend-Mallard in Twin Lakes Conference play.
