Tritons win two more national titles

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Iowa Central men and women followed up their dual national cross country championships by doing the same at the NJCAA half-marathon meet here on Saturday.

Both Triton squads repeated as team winners with relative ease. In addition, Adva Cohen and Karim Achengli were individual half-marathon champs. Achengli went back-to-back in the event.

The Iowa Central men secured the top three individual spots for the second year in a row. Achengli (1:07.51) was followed by teammates Jhordan Ccope (1:08.15) and Ezekiel Kipchirchir (1:09.44).

Achengli, Ccope and Kipchirchir were named All-Americans.

Cohen, a freshman Jerusalem, Israel, ran a 1:20.25 and clinched NJCAA Div. I national women’s athlete of the year honors in the process. Sophomore teammate Agnes Mansaray (1:23.36) was third.

Cohen is the third consecutive Iowa Central half-marathon women’s national champ, joining Leanne Pompeani, who won it in both 2015 and ’16.

Cohen, Mansaray and Marion Bartilol were Iowa Central All-Americans.

Triton head coach Dee Brown was named both the men’s and women’s national coach of the year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. It’s the second men’s award in Brown’s 14-year career, and his first on the women’s side.

The Iowa Central men now has seven individual crowns and six team titles, which are both all-time records. The women have tied the national marks with three and four, respectively.

The Triton men and women both clinched NJCAA national championships last week at Lakeside, as did Cohen on the individual side.
