St. Edmond loses to Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt baseball team showed they are still a tough out in the North Central Conference, downing St. Edmond here Wednesday night, 11-1 in six innings.

The Wildcats won the league title last year with a perfect 14-0 record, but graduated many members of that team. They have won their last 26 games in the conference dating back to 2015.

Humboldt (4-2 overall, 1-0 in NCC) has won now two straight and four of five since an opening night loss to East Sac County.

Devon Clark went the distance, striking out six and walking four. He allowed just five hits and helped his own cause with an RBI.

Owen Newton was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Wildcats, while Isaac Thurm drove in a pair. Reese DeWinter, Michael Brightly and Hudson Gargano all scored two runs.

After starting the year 3-0, the Gaels have now dropped two straight. They walked 12 batters, left 10 on base and committed five errors.

“Those are all things you just can’t do and expect to win,” SEHS head coach Joe Shanks said. “We loaded the bases twice and didn’t hit the ball out of the infield. We beat ourselves.

“Humboldt hit the ball hard and put pressure on us.”

Brant Reiling had two hits, including a triple, for the Gaels and Chris Baker scored the lone run.

The Wildcats are back in action Thursday night when they step back out of NCC play, hosting Southeast Valley. St. Edmond welcomes Iowa Falls-Alden to Rogers Park Friday night.

Humboldt also won the junior varsity contest, 7-5. Peyton Scott was 1-for-1 with two RBI for the Gaels.
