Ackerson leads Jaguars past St. Edmond

Jaiden Ackerson is the lone senior on Southeast Valley’s softball roster.

With that comes added responsibility to help provide leadership for a group that consists of six sophomores, three freshmen and an eighth-grader.

On Tuesday night, Ackerson showed more than just leadership, going 3-for-4 with three RBI including a three-run homer to help the Jaguars best St. Edmond, 11-0, at Rogers Park.

Ackerson’s bases clearing shot came an inning after Southeast Valley (4-1 overall) plated six runs to turn a 1-0 lead over the Gaels (1-4) into a commanding 7-0 advantage.

“It is very rewarding to see someone like Jaiden have a big night like this,” SEV head coach Heather Lundberg said. “She is leading this group and has done a nice job for us this year in that role.”

Kasey Lundberg, Mady Jaeschke and Mackenzie Crampton all drove in two runs each, while Crampton tossed a four-hitter with four strikeouts.

Shelby Cummins, Lundberg, Cassidy Lambert, Jaeschke, Crampton, Sam Alphs and Jaynie Ferrari all had two hits each, as the Jaguars recorded 18 hits on the night.

“These girls like to compete against one another every single night and every single at-bat,” Lundberg said. “That is just their mentality. It’s probably because of their youth, but it is a lot of fun to watch.”

After winning 22 games two years ago, Southeast Valley went 19-11 and returns eight starters from a season ago. That includes Ackerson.

“We’ve really hit the ball very consistently so far this year,” Lundberg said. “We didn’t get the big hit early in the game, but we stuck with it.”

For the Gaels, Erin Flattery went 2-for-3 with a double, while Jacque Oberg and Macey Mason each had a base hit. Mason, who threw out a runner in the first inning from leftfield, also stole a base.

“I’m very happy with how we played,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. “We competed until the end. It was a close game (until the fifth), we just need to do a better job of initiating pressure to try and make things happen.

“We’ll keep pushing the girls and I know they’ll keep pushing us. I’m not worried. We’re going to have a successful season.”

Crampton, a freshman, got herself out of a first inning jam by striking out two. She also induced 11 flyball outs on the night.

St. Edmond returns to action Thursday, hosting Iowa Falls-Alden. Southeast Valley welcomes Sioux Central Wednesday night to Harcourt.
