Dodgers, Gaels ready for districts

All the preparation and dedication will come to the forefront on Thursday as area cross country runners will try to secure a spot in Fort Dodge next weekend.

There will be 20 district sites across the state of Iowa. The top 15 individuals and top three teams will advance to the co-ed state meet.

The state meet will once again be held at Lakeside in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Fort Dodge boys and girls will travel to Cedar Falls for a Class 4A district meet. The Dodgers will be joined by the host Tigers and Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Marshalltown, Mason City, Southeast Polk, Urbandale, Waterloo East and Waterloo West.

The Fort Dodge boys are led by Ryan Wagner. The Dodger senior was as an All-Conference selection last week, placing 15th in the CIC Meet.

At the CIC meet, Jason Halvorson was 18th. Also counting for the Dodgers was Justin Vaughan (19th), Maxwell Hanish (31st) and Brennen DeCoursey (34th).

For the Dodger girls, Gabby Estlund was also an All-Conference pick, crossing in 16th. Anna Taylor was 34th and Brylea Grady was 37th.

Ranked teams in the field will be No. 3 Dubuque Hempstead, No. 6 Cedar Falls, and No. 14 Dubuque Senior.

On the boys side, second-ranked Sam Schillinger of Cedar Falls will be in action, along with No. 12 Addison Kalb (Dubuque Hempstead), No. 20 Drake Henrichs (Urbandale), No. 23 Jalen Hildebrand (Dubuque Senior) and No. 30 David Holesinger (Dubuque Hempstead).

Ranked girls teams are No. 2 Cedar Falls, No. 4 Dubuque Hempstead and No. 9 Dubuque Senior.

On the girls side, ranked individuals are No. 6 Cassidy Christopher and No. 8 Mackenzie Michael, No. 14 Carolina Ross, No. 19 Paige Kale and No. 20 Allison Zierke of Cedar Falls.

Ranked for Dubuque Senior is No. 9 Mackenzie Gaherty and No. 12 Ashley Donovan.

Dubuque Hempstead rated runners are No. 13 Hannah Brown, No. 18 Shaelyn Hostager and No. 23 Kristin Brown.

Southeast Polk’s Sierra Mitchell is No. 30.

The Gaels will be running at Holstein. Joining St. Edmond will be Bishop Garrigan, Manson Northwest Webster, West Bend-Mallard, Akron-Westfield, Alta/Aurelia, Boyer Valley, LeMars Gehlen, Harris-Lake Park, Hartley-HMS, Hinton, Lawton-Bronson, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, MMCRU, OA-BCIG, Ridge View, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Sioux Central, Siouxland. South O’Brien, Remsen St. Mary’s, Trinity Christian, West Lyon, West Sioux, Westwood, and Whiting, Woodbine.

The sixth-ranked St. Edmond girls enter action coming off a third-place showing at the North Central Conference Meet. St. Edmond’s Riley Mayer finished as an all-conference recipient with a seventh-place showing. Also running for the Gaels was Abby Landwehr (9th), Audrey Kolacia (10th), Joeli Koenig (26th) and Jaci Taylor (29th).

The only other ranked girls squad is No. 13 Alta-Aurelia.

On the boys side at the NCC meet, Patrick Bocken was (36th). Also running was Cole Allison (38th), Isaac Lursen (42nd), Jake Heidenreich (44th) and Matt Bennett (45th).

Both the St. Edmond squads qualified for state last season. The Gael girls were fifth and the boys were seventh.

Landwehr was 11th, Kolacia was 14th and Mayer was 22nd at state.

Lursen and senior Alison are the lone returnees from the Gaels’ qualifying boys squad.

Ranked boys teams are No. 10 Boyer Valley, and No. 11 Trinity Christian. Boyer Valley’s Ben Behrendt is ranked ninth.
