POWER SURGE

Korinne Jansen and Mallory Loftus embraced the big stage for Lynnville-Sully on Tuesday, picking the perfect time to break out the long ball after a season of being kept in the yard.

Jansen and Loftus both hit their first home runs of the year, powering the fourth-ranked Hawks to a 9-4 Class 1A state quarterfinal victory over Wayne on Iowa Central Field at Rogers Park. Lynnville-Sully (19-2 overall) advances to square off with top-rated and two-time defending state champion Collins-Maxwell (20-1) in Wednesday’s semifinal round.

Wayne bows out at 17-5.

Jansen drove in a season-high five runs from her lead-off position in the order. Loftus went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in a pair.

The Hawks snapped a 3-3 deadlock for good with a six-run explosion in the fifth. Denali Conover (18-2) then sealed the victory from the pitcher’s circle.

Conover, a junior, surrendered just two earned runs, scattering eight hits in the win.

Emily Jones and Allie Wilk both had two hits for the Lady Falcons, who returned seven starters from last summer’s state semifinal squad. Jones doubled twice.

Jones and Camryn Jacobsen drove in runs, and Mya Willey scored twice for Wayne.

Janelle Rozendaal was 2-for-2 with an RBI for L-S, which is at state for the seventh time since 2010. Caitlin Alberts scored twice.
