North Scott advances in lopsided 4A opener

Fifth-ranked North Scott took advantage of a shaky Charles City defense to score early and often on Monday to set up a rematch of the 2019 Class 4A state title game.

The Lancers scored five first-inning runs, courtesy of just two hits and four Charles City errors, and cruised to an 11-0, 5-inning victory in a Class 4A quarterfinal on Iowa Central Field at the Rogers Sports Complex.

North Scott (17-9) will challenge top-ranked Carlisle (19-3) in the semifinal round on Wednesday. Carlisle nipped the Lancers, 1-0, in last season’s state final, and the rematch will feature a combined 13 starters that were on the field a summer ago.

No. 7 Charles City (13-4) bowed out after committing five errors and connecting for only five hits. North Scott, meanwhile, ripped 11 hits, four of which went for extra bases.

Sam Lee went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs in North Scott’s rout of Charles City. Kyleigh Westlin smacked two hits and plated three runs, Rachel Anderson added two hits — a double and triple — and an RBI, and Taylor Robertson laced a pair of singles.

Lydia Staudt led Charles City at the plate with two singles.

An RBI double by Anderson increased North Scott’s lead to 6-0 in the second inning. Lee found the gap for a two-RBI double in the third, and Newman and Westlin added RBI singles in the fourth.

Charles City threatened in the fourth when it loaded the bases with no outs, but North Scott hurler Ryann Cheek wiggled out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts and a line out.

Cheek fanned eight in four innings of work before handing the ball over to Drew Lewis in the fifth.
