The 17th annual Swing for a Cure golf outing is scheduled for Friday, June 10 at the Fort Dodge Country Club. The day will kick off with lunch beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon for a four-person best-shot, flighted tournament. We are excited that our golf team roster is already full, however there are still ways you can support this important cause.

We have raffle tickets available for $5 each or five for $20. Raffle prizes include a $500 HyVee gift card, Yeti cooler, iPad, and Apple Watch, shoes donated by Brown’s Shoes. Raffle winners do not need to be present at the event to win. We are also still accepting hole sponsors and can always use extra volunteers. The outpouring of generosity and support Swing for a Cure receives year after year is a wonderful testament to our community’s members and businesses. Because of this generous support, this event has raised more than $203,000 over the past 16 years for the Trinity Diabetes Center! All proceeds from Swing for a Cure stay in our community, directly impacting the care of community members with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This is vital, as diabetes is one of the top healthcare needs for the Fort Dodge region. The proceeds raised in previous years have been used for various efforts including:

• Sending children with Type 1 diabetes to Camp Hertko Hollow. Camp Hertko Hollow specializes in diabetes care and education for children living with diabetes. Children and their families are given the unique opportunity to enjoy time with peers who share many of the same day-to-day challenges that come with having diabetes.

• Providing innovative pre-diabetes programming. The best method to control diabetes is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Trinity Diabetes Center is continuing to offer research-based pre-diabetes education. This year-long, group-based, intensive program provides those with pre-diabetes the knowledge and skills to delay or prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes. Research shows that by losing just 5-7 percent of starting body weight, an individual can reduce their risk of developing diabetes by 58 percent

• Hosting an annual Diabetes Fair. The informational fair is held each spring and features various guests discussing the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

• Purchasing professional continuous glucose monitoring systems, hands on educational materials, and ongoing staff training that ensures the Trinity Diabetes Center stays current with the latest technologies that allow for the best care and patient outcomes.

Diabetes ranks as the seventh leading cause of death nationwide with 1 in 3 people being diagnosed in their lifetime. When diabetes goes undiagnosed or uncontrolled, serious health complications can occur. Early diagnosis and education are key components to living a long and healthy life with diabetes.
