Believe it or not, it is time for the Iowa State Fair. What may well be the grandest of our nation’s state agricultural festivities – the Iowa State Fair – will begin Wednesday and run through Aug. 21. Iowans gathered in Fairfield for the first state fair in 1854 – just eight years after achieving statehood. That fair boasted an attendance of about 8,000. New sculpture at Terry Moehnke Veterans Memorial Park deserves support

The boy holds an American flag above his head at an angle, with one hand on the flagpole and the other beneath the red and white stripes. Just behind him, a girl stands with one arm outstretched. That’s the sight that will soon greet visitors to Terry Moehnke Veterans Memorial Park north of Fort Dodge. Iowa Sales Tax Holiday starts Friday

It’s hard to believe, but area families are already beginning to think about the items that will be needed to send young folks back to school properly equipped and looking good. According to the National Retail Federation, a typical family with children in school will spend about $864 on back-to-school merchandise. Previous surveys by the federation have shown that clothing and shoes account for about half of a family’s back-to-school spending. River cleanup effort will be fun opportunity

Would you like to get out on the water on a hot summer day? And would you like to be part of an effort that will clean up the Des Moines River in Fort Dodge? An event this Saturday will give people an opportunity to do both of those things. And as an added bonus, some participants will get to go out on Duck Island in the middle of the river. Emily Markert was inspirational in promoting organ donors

The story of the late Emily Markert is both tragic and inspiring. Like those who knew her, we prefer to focus on the inspiring part. But first, the tragic part. When she was 17, the Manson resident was stricken with a severe lung problem that necessitated a partial lung transplant. Her uncles, Don Fitzgerald and Larry Fitzgerald, donated lobes from their lungs and the operation was completed in October 1999. She was healthy for awhile, but then her body began rejecting the donated lobes. In February 2006, she had a second transplant. Her health failed again however, and she died in ...

For OHV riders, Gypsum City is paradise

A sprawling testament to a creative vision and strong partnerships can be found south of Fort Dodge. It is called the Gypsum City Off Highway Vehicle Park and it is spread over 800 acres of land that were once gypsum quarries. The first section of the park opened July 8, 2006. Since then, it has steadily grown to become the largest park of its kind in the state and one of the largest in the Midwest.
