It’s time to put trivia knowledge, driving skills to work
Meals on Wheels needs help to keep delivering food to the elderly
Have you ever been accused of having a trivial mind?
Now, we don’t mean that in any insulting way. But if you have a mind for obscure facts and figures – the stuff that forms the basis of trivia games – you have a gift that can be put to use helping to make sure that some of the older residents in our community will be assured of getting at least one hot meal a day.
Meals on Wheels, the organization that delivers that food, is having a trivia game night Saturday as a fundraiser. It begins at 6 p.m. at Willow Ridge Golf Course, 1788 Madison Ave. The cost is $50 per person, and you can pay at the door that night. Heavy appetizers will be served.
A committee has been doing some research on trivia for this event. Among other topics, there will be questions on Iowa and Fort Dodge history and on Halloween. Prizes will be awarded for each round. There will also be silent and live auctions.
There is another opportunity to help Meals on Wheels. The organization needs some additional drivers. The drivers are the people who pick up the meals and deliver them.
Although that may seem like a heavy burden, it really isn’t. Because of the rotation schedule that has been in place for awhile each volunteer driver generally works one week at a time and does so once every 10 weeks.
Each driver picks up 10 to 12 meals at Hy-Vee, 115 S. 29th St. and delivers them. The delivery routes are entirely within Fort Dodge city limits.
There are two opportunities to help Meals on Wheels. You can put your trivia knowledge to work and utilize your driving skills to get hot food to those who need it. We encourage people to consider participating in the trivia night or volunteering to drive a route, or maybe even do both.
