Trump makes a sound move

Withholding funds that might help Assad is the right decision

Even his fiercest foes ought to be able to see the wisdom of a decision recently by President Donald Trump.

Apparently, some do not.

That is most unfortunate.

About $230 million in “stabilization” funds the United States had agreed to spend in Syria will be withheld, Trump decided. Money for humanitarian purposes and to continue battling Islamic State terrorists will continue to flow.

Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, promptly condemned the change. Trump is “abdicating American leadership on the global stage,” he accused.

Nonsense.

“Stabilization” funds sent to Syria merely prop up the regime of murderous dictator Bashar Assad — who is linked closely to Russia.

Why help such a regime?

Trump is right on this one, and thoughtful lawmakers should not attempt to block his decision.
