Mary Ellen Christensen

Mary Ellen (Smith) Christensen, daughter of Spencer and Myrtie (Evans) Smith, was born on March 21, 1923, in Troy Township. She attended grade school at Troy #3. Mary Ellen graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1941. After graduation she attended AIB in Des Moines and worked at Gibson Pump and Equipment Company until returning to Eagle Grove to care for her ailing mother. During this time, she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1945 she married Wilford L. (Stub) Christensen. Stub and Mary Ellen raised three children, Larry Dean, Robert Spencer and Debra Jo.

Mary Ellen loved the out-of-doors; their cabin at the lake, fishing, boating, beautiful sunsets and even snow on Christmas Eve. She enjoyed sitting on the patio and watching her garden (flowers) grow, the birds at the feeders and being disgusted at the squirrels for eating the bird seed. Friends knew not to phone her around 3:00 p.m. because that was the Jeopardy hour and she was busy watching the game.

Mary Ellen was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eastern Star, PEO and Rotary Ann Auxiliary.

She is survived by sons Larry (Gail) and Bob (Jacquie), daughter Debra and grandson Ryan (Claire) Polsfuss, great-granddaughter Lucia Polsfuss, several nieces and nephews and special niece and nephew Bev and Paul. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Wilford L. (Stub), her parents Spencer and Myrtie Smith, brothers Spencer B. Jr and sister-in-law Gerene Smith and Ellwyn (Bus) Smith and his children Tim and Lisa, father-in-law and mother-in-law Holger and Nora Christensen, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Jim Jergenson, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Donald and Lillian Christensen and their son Michael and her beloved pets Cuddles, Taffy and Molly.
