FD man sentenced on drug charges

SIOUX CITY — A Fort Dodge man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug charges.

Andrew Smith, 32, of Fort Dodge, was sentenced in Sioux City on Wednesday.

According to the United States attorney’s office, Northern District of Iowa, Smith admitted that he conspired to distribute more than 5 kilograms of methamphetamine between 2012 and 2016.

Around August 2014, Smith said he received about 6.5 pounds of meth from a source, and from the summer to the fall of 2015 he received multiple quantities of meth on numerous occasions and distributed the drugs to multiple customers in the Fort Dodge area.

Smith’s total sentence is 188 months — more than 15 and half years. Once his sentence is completed, he will have to serve five years of supervised release.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn Wehde and Special Assistant United States Attorney Ajay Alexander. It was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Webster County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Division and the Fort Dodge Police Department.
